From Demo to Live

Almost everyone is profitable on demo and struggles on their first live account. This book explains exactly what changes, how to use a demo account so the results actually mean something, and how to size your first live account so the transition does not wipe you out.

Chapter 1 - What demo cannot teach you

Three months of demo trading, up 40%. The strategy works, the process is solid, time to go live. Six weeks later the live account is down and nothing about the strategy has changed.

This happens to nearly everybody, and it is not because demo pricing is unrealistic or the broker is against you. It is because demo removes the single most important variable in trading: the feeling of losing your own money.

On demo, a losing trade is information. On live, a losing trade is £180 that was yours and now is not. The chart is identical. Your response to it is not. You hesitate on an entry you would have taken instantly. You close a winner at half your target because the profit is real now and you want to keep it. You widen a stop, just this once, because taking the loss makes it permanent.

None of those behaviours showed up in three months of demo, so you have had no practice at handling them. That is what makes the transition so jarring: you are not testing your strategy for the first time, you are testing yourself for the first time, and you have done zero preparation for it.

You cannot fully solve this - some of it only comes from live repetitions. But you can make the step far smaller than most people make it, and that starts with using demo very differently from how you probably are. That is the next chapter.
